After Hydrogen Agreement Among 9 carmakers, H2 Mobilty Gets the Green Light

Companies and institutions together to fuel FC vehicles

In order to confirm the view that hydrogen will be the fuel of the future, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation/Opel, Honda Motor Co. Ltd, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors Corporation, Die Allianz Renault SA, Nissan Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding for the development and series production of fuel cell electric vehicles. Actually, considering the remarkable know-how of these corporations in the fuel cell sector, the zero emission target is getting increasingly near.

The terms of the agreement state that as from 2015 a considerable number of cars, estimated to be around hundreds of thousands, will be introduced into the market worldwide. The production strategies, the market distribution and schedule planning will be defined by each single carmaker, thus enabling some vehicles to be available earlier than the date above mentioned.

However, the condition to have fuel cell cars acknowledged by the market lies in the development of a widespread network of hydrogen stations starting to come on-stream by 2015. Considering the latest great progress in the hydrogen sector, Germany has been chosen as the pilot market of zero emission mobility but afterwards a distribution network similar to the one established in Germany will be extended to other countries, including the USA, Japan and Korea as furthest strategic markets.

Actually the “H2 Mobility” initiative has just been launched in Berlin in a press conference attended by the Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, where the H2 Mobility partners, such as Daimler, EnBW, Linde, OMV, Shell, Total, Vattenfall and NOW GmbH have signed an agreement whose purpose is to set up a fuelling hydrogen infrastructure. Joining the initiative is, however, extended to any further interested companies.

The signed agreement envisages two phases. The first one will be dedicated to planning the infrastructure as well as to developing a joint business strategy supported by public institutions.

If the early phase proves to be successful for all the partners, the second one will be dedicated to action. The objective will be the accomplishment of the network of fuelling stations necessary to market fuel cell electric vehicles which will be driving in Germany as from 2015.

Wolfang Tiefenseei, Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, pointed out: “Today, after more than 100 years of combustion engines and the dominance of oil, we are facing a new technological era in the transport sector. Germany, with its excellent ideas from all over the country, is to become the market leader for modern drive technologies. This will secure and create new employment in the markets of the future. Our aim is to continue consistent and systematic promotion of electromobility based on batteries and fuel cells. Today we can see that Germany is setting the pace when it comes to hydrogen and fuel cell technology. We are aiming at establishing the nation-wide supply with hydrogen in Germany at around 2015 in order to support the serial-production of fuel cell vehicles.”

Dr Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Division, spokesman of the specific needs of the automotive sector, said: “FC cars’ only emission is water vapour. It is a good solution for people’s health and the protection of the environment; for this reason we wish to introduce the FC technology as soon as possible. However, FC cars will be driving on our roads only when fuelling stations are available: therefore, in order to build a proper infrastructure we also need the support of mining and energy supply companies as well as of public institutions.”
