Range Extender Technology to Enhance the Electric Range

Mercedes-Benz introduces the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS

Fotogallery Even in the transitional phase towards the accomplishment of an all-electric motor, there is no indication that the internal combustion engine is going to give up: its role in the “Range Extender” Technology is, however, confined to the recharge of the electric motor’s batteries.

After the BlueZERO E-CELL only electric drive version, now Mercedes introduces its range extender solution with the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS, which will soon be coming on stream. It has got a maximum range of 600 km, of which a hundred can be driven in the electric mode, without any emissions.

For the other 500 km the car is assisted by a 50-kW 3-cylinder petrol engine, which, located close to the rear shaft, is able to recharge the battery while driving. Thanks to that, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS emits only 32 gr of CO2 per km.

The Range Extender technology enables the car to get to its destination quite safely, even when the battery charge is running out and no service station is available.

Thanks to its 20 kW charge capacity, the 18 kWh high energy li-ion battery of the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS takes 30 minutes to recharge the power to drive 50 km, while slightly more than an hour is necessary for a hundred kilometres’ recharge.

A recharge from a standard household socket takes about 6 hours.
